Our Mission
Through its efforts in public relations, community education, and fundraising, the Chicago Lying-in Hospital Board of Directors supports the University of Chicago Medicine and the Chicago Lying-in Hospital in their various programs to advance education, research, and patient care relating to the health of women and infants.
Education
- Patient programs have included peer counseling, shaken-baby prevention, doula assistance, prenatal classes, and a boot camp for first-time dads
- Continuing professional education for nurses, such as breastfeeding/lactation consulting and perinatal loss training in English and Spanish
- Community health education programs
Research
- A major gift to the Atef H. Moawad, M.D., Fund for Perinatal Research
- Annual scholarships to research fellows in the Section of Maternal/Fetal Medicine
- One-time research grants to young investigators
Patient Care
- The purchase of layettes and soft-fabric infant carriers
- Diabetic breakfasts to teach good nutrition to women who develop diabetes during pregnancy
- Art and craft supplies, videos and books for long-term patients
- Memory boxes for parents who lose infants before or following birth
- Works of art in patient areas to help create a healing environment
Capital Equipment
- A state-of-the-art ultrasound machine for the women’s clinic
- A laparoscopic surgery simulator for the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology
- A specialized microscope for breast cancer research
